Last month’s workshop took us into the world of mobile night photography. A place where shadows stretch, colours vanish, and everything becomes shape, light, and suggestion. The darkness may have discouraged public entries this time, but it offered plenty of opportunities to experiment. Here are three examples from the workshop, each showing how a simple phone can capture atmosphere after sunset.
Chimney Smoke at Night
The rising plume of chimney smoke reveals how even the faintest light can create drama against a black sky. Night photography often depends on contrast rather than colour here, the fine details in the smoke become the subject itself.
Moonlit Trees in Fog
Mist and moonlight turn a familiar woodland into something otherworldly. Shooting into the light can be difficult on a mobile phone, but silhouettes of branches create strong shapes that the camera handles well. Where daylight records details, darkness records mood.
Moonlight on Water
Reflected moonlight is one of the most forgiving subjects at night. The shimmering path across the water draws the viewer’s eye and gives a sense of depth, even when much of the scene falls into shadow.
These images show that night photography isn’t so much about mastering exposure it’s more about noticing what the darkness reveals, and trusting your phone to capture a little of its magic.
